Wyoming

February 2001.........

Yellowstone National Park: Yellowstone was established in 1872, originally to protect the unique geysers, hot springs and other hydrothermal features. In the park we watched Old Faithful, it goes off every 91 minutes, visited Old Faithful Inn, a historic log structure built in 1904, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Ft. Yellowstone, built in 1886 for the Army to protect the park. It was used until 1916 when the government established a parks system. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, with it's upper and lower falls is spectacular with many overlooks and trails, and many different colors in the soil. It's close to Canyon Village, where there are stores, restaurants and a visitor center. Looked over the campground at Fishing Bridge, the only campground in the park with full hook-ups. Only allows hard-sided rigs because of the bears. We like the campground we're staying in, Madison, much better, larger sites and better access to most of the park. We drove all the accessible roads, enjoyed seeing the new growth trees in the one third of the park that burned, and enjoyed our time in Yellowstone.
