Devils Tower National Park: Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River, and was once hidden by erosion. The park contains 1347 acres and is covered with pine forests, woodlands and grasslands. President Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national Monument in 1906. We made a quick trip to see the tower on a cold, rainy day as a side trip from the Newmar International Rally in Gillette, Wy.

Gillette: We came to Gillette for the Newmar International Rally, at the Cam-Plex, which is a 1,000 acre multi-use facility that has many buildings, a covered stadium, rodeo grounds and several RV parks. The Cam-Plex is one of the nicer places to have an RV rally in the country.
Gillette was formed over 110 years ago, as a railroad town, even before Wyoming became a state, opening new markets to ranchers in the Powder River Basin. Coal and oil in the 1970's transformed Gillette into the "Energy Capitol of the Nation". Campbell County mines more than one-forth of all American coal. These open-pit mines provide one-third of the nations electricity, and have become models for reclamation all over the world. We took a tour of the Eagle Butte Mine, and it was very interesting. The tours are on a bus and there is only one place on the tour one can get off the bus to look around.

Gillette: One night at the rally grounds we had a storm blow up. The clouds were spectacular. After the storm passed we could see a strange light show, people from the area told us they were the Northern Lights. We have seen them before, but not in June. I guess we will take their word for it, whatever they were they were beautiful.
