July 2009 .............

Battle Creek: Our main reason for going to Battle Creek was to see Kellogg's Cereal City. After 80 years of providing factory tours the Kellog company closed their doors to the public. In 1998 Cereal City was opened, it's a museum, simulated factory tour and interactive excitement all rolled into one. You'll learn about the Kellog's brothers, the history of cereal, the story of Tony the Tiger ( and watch him dance and get your picture taken with him if you're lucky),  and watch all the old time Kellogs commercials on TV. You can take home a box of Kellog's Frosted Flakes with your picture on it, eat at the Red Onion Grill, or try a Fruit Loops Sunday. One of the things we enjoyed was posters that listed highlights from the 1900's to 2000. To list a few: 1921 - Betty Crocker is born, 1957 - Whopper sells for 37 cents, 1962 Pull-tab can openers were patened. No matter what age you are this tour is worth doing. There was a tour charge, can't remember what, but not high. We did get a senior discount.

Battle Creek: Michigan Central Depot. The depot opened in 1888, it was one several Richardsonian Romanesque style stations the Michigan Central built between Detroit and Chicago. Thomas Edison, William Howard Taft and Gerald Ford visited the station. The depot was acquired by the New York Central RR in 1918, Penn Central in 1968 and Amtrack in 1970. It is listed on the Natioinal Register of Historic Places. It is currently a resturant called "Clara's On The River". The interior is beautiful and the food was good.
