June 11 - June 15: On the 11th we traveled from Teslin to Whitehorse, AM was 33 degrees and it was 50 when we arrived in Whitehorse. Miles Traveled: 181. Whitehorse is a neat city with many things to see and do. Found a wonderful pace to eat, Klondike Rib & Salmon BBQ. Beer Batter halibut, halibut chowder, foccacia bread and bumbleberry pie are the foods they are famous for. Places visited: SS Klondike, a restored stern-wheeler, built in 1937 to travel between Whitehorse and Dawson City; Transportation Museum, very interesting; Frantic Follies which included dancing girls, banjo playing, lots of good comedy and some Robert Service poetry, very well done production. Cost $10 each. Highlight of our Whitehorse stay was the MukTuk Kennels, owned by Frank Turner. (Click here for 2005 Quest Pictures) He has run the Yukon Quest 1,000 mile sled dog race from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, that takes 10 to 14, days twenty one times. Spent an afternoon with him and his dogs, he shows a video, lets you play with the dogs, and shows you how he prepares for the race and what he does on the trail when it's 30 to 50 below. Cost was $20 each.

June 13th: we took a side trip to on the Knoldike Highway 2 to Skagway in the Jeep. What a beautiful drive, winding road, snow capped mountains and beautiful lakes. The town is a cruise ship port and reminded us of Key West. The Yukon RR excursion train runs out of Skagway, we didn't take it because we had driven the highway, however many people think it's a wonderful trip. Stopped at Dyea to visit an old cemetery, then went to the trail head of the Chilkoot Trail, a 33 mile trail up the Chilkoot Pass. It took an average of three months for the gold seekers to climb this trail with the required 2,000 lbs of supplies required. The trail is very steep and rocky. The wildflowers are beautiful, Lupine, Chocolate Lilly and wild iris. Total miles: 256

June 16: Whitehorse to Dawson City: Alaska Highway 2 aka "The Knondike Loop". Scenery not as striking as some other days, pretty barren because of past forest fires, road narrow and rough. Picked up a good sized chip in the Jeep windshield. Would suggest some type of protection for your tow car. Warm today, 80's, the farther North we get the nicer the weather. Miles Traveled: 339

June 17-20: Dawson City, Yukon and Top of THe World Highway: Parks Canada owns many of the attractions in Dawson, one can purchase a set of tickets that will get you into the attractions at the visitor center. Some of the places to visit: Dredge # 4, the largest wooden hull bucket-lined dredge in North America; the walking tour around the town; the Commissioners House; Dome Mountain, where there is a big celebration on June 21st to watch the sun set and then immediately rise again; Diamond Tooth Gerties; Klondike Kate's restaurant and Robert Service Cabin. Most buildings have been restored to their 1880's glory. The streets are still dirt and they left a few buildings to show what permafrost did to them. Took a lesson on panning gold. Planned to leave on the 19th, however the forest fires by the Top Of The World Highway kept us here another day. On the 20th we got in line for the ferry to cross the Yukon River so we could head up the Top of the Word Highway, waited two hours. Just as we were getting on the ferry they closed the road because of the fires at Chicken. We decided to go as far as we could. The road was pretty good gravel until we reached the US border. Picture the worst gravel road you've ever been on and multiply it by 100. In the US it was dust and washboards. We averaged seven mph for about 40 miles, the smoke was terrible and we decided this road wasn't a good choice. Passed a stalled coach, they had been waiting over 24 hours for a tow truck. At Chicken the road was closed, they came by later and took up through with a fire truck. There was fire on both sides of the road, another adventure to add to the list! Didn't get to see any of the scenery because of the smoke.
