June 11 - June 15: On the 11th we traveled from Teslin to Whitehorse, AM was 33 degrees and it was 50 when we arrived in Whitehorse. Miles Traveled: 181. Whitehorse is a neat city with many things to see and do. Found a wonderful pace to eat, Klondike Rib & Salmon BBQ. Beer Batter halibut, halibut chowder, foccacia bread and bumbleberry pie are the foods they are famous for. Places visited: SS Klondike, a restored stern-wheeler, built in 1937 to travel between Whitehorse and Dawson City; Transportation Museum, very interesting; Frantic Follies which included dancing girls, banjo playing, lots of good comedy and some Robert Service poetry, very well done production. Cost $10 each. Highlight of our Whitehorse stay was the MukTuk Kennels, owned by Frank Turner. (Click here for 2005 Quest Pictures) He has run the Yukon Quest 1,000 mile sled dog race from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, that takes 10 to 14, days twenty one times. Spent an afternoon with him and his dogs, he shows a video, lets you play with the dogs, and shows you how he prepares for the race and what he does on the trail when it's 30 to 50 below. Cost was $20 each.
June 13th: we took a side trip to on the Knoldike Highway 2 to Skagway in the Jeep. What a beautiful drive, winding road, snow capped mountains and beautiful lakes. The town is a cruise ship port and reminded us of Key West. The Yukon RR excursion train runs out of Skagway, we didn't take it because we had driven the highway, however many people think it's a wonderful trip. Stopped at Dyea to visit an old cemetery, then went to the trail head of the Chilkoot Trail, a 33 mile trail up the Chilkoot Pass. It took an average of three months for the gold seekers to climb this trail with the required 2,000 lbs of supplies required. The trail is very steep and rocky. The wildflowers are beautiful, Lupine, Chocolate Lilly and wild iris. Total miles: 256 |
