September 2001 ...........
Lake Oahe: The lake is located in N. Central South Dakota, and spans 231 miles from Pierre SD to Bismarck ND. The park is federal and is comprised of 461,000 acres of land and water, with 51 recreation areas. The lake is 205 ft. deep and is known for Walleye fishing. It's the largest of the Great Lakes reservoirs and is on the Lewis and Clark Trail. We spent some time there, at the end of the lake close to Pierre. Dean hired a guide for Walleye fishing. At that time he could catch fourteen Walleye a day for three days, he easily got his limit, we enjoyed out stay, and the campground was nice.

July 2000 ...........
Custer State Park: The park is in the Badlands and contains 71,000 acres. A herd of 1500 Bison roam freely throughout the park. If you take the 18 mile wildlife loop you will often be up close and personal with them. We were stopped several times waiting for them to cross and this old guy wanted to challenge us.

July 2000 ...........
Deadwood: Incorporated in 1876 and named for the dead trees that were found in the narrow canyon (Deadwood Gulch),
where you'll find the historic Main and Sherman streets. It had the first telephone exchange in SD. Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried in Deadwood (Hickok was killed there). In 1989 gambling was legalized to rejuvenate tourism. We were very disappointed, we went to see a historic town, and even though is is well restored, it's main draw is gambling, and that's very evident everywhere you go.
