July 2007 ...........
Glacier national Park: After leaving Waterton Natl Park in Canada, and crossing back into the good old USA, we met our friends Tom & Mary Hagney and John & Nancy Kelker in St Mary Montana, which is just outside of Glacier. The Hagney's and the Kelker's are full time RV'ers. (For our non RV Friends - they do not have a fixed home)
Glacier was established in 1910, and is part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. "Waterton-Glacier International Peace park represents a vision of a world in which peoples set aside their differences to work collectively in the interest of all life, for all time"
The Going to the Sun Road had just opened in early July, because of the damage to the road from winter storms. It is one of the world's most spectacular highways, fifty miles long and is the only road that goes clear across the park. It runs from the Saint Mary Visitor Center to the Apgar Visitor Center and can be accessed from either side of the park. We drove our own car, one can also take a tour bus.
The hotel pictured below is the Many Glacier Hotel, on Swiftwater lake, accessed from the Going to the Sun Road. It is another hotel built by the Great Northern Railroad, and was constructed in 1915. We used the hotel as a base for a wonderful hike along the lake, with signs all along the trail telling us that we were in "bear country". At the end of the trail we ate the lunch we had packed in, then caught a tour boat back to the hotel. In 'hiker" picture below, left to right - Nancy Kelker, Laurel, Tom & Mary Hagney and John Kelker. Dean took the photo, so didn't get in the picture.
