Idaho

August 2007.............

Craters of the Moon National Monument: The monument is one of the best places in the world to see the awesome effect of volcanism, and contains 750,000 acres. It is part of the Snake River plane, a volcanic terrain that spans all of Southern Idaho. We were surprised at the number of wildflowers that were blooming. Craters of the Moon is on Highways 93/26/20, close to Arco Idaho. We took a day trip from Ketchum to see it. It was a long day, but worth it.

August 2007.............

EBR-1: (Experimental Breeder Reactor-1 ) generated the world's first usable amount of electricity form nuclear energy in December 1951. You will see four nuclear reactors, including two aircraft nuclear propulsion prototypes, a reactor control room, remote handling devices for radioactive materials, radiation detection equipment, and much more. You'll learn how electricity is produced from splitting atoms and see numerous displays. There are both self guided and guided tours. It is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, seven days a week from 9 to 5. It is 18 miles from Arco, and easy to visit at the same time you go to Craters of the Moon. We thought it was a worthwhile stop.
