Idaho

August 2007.............

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area: The area runs along the northwestern border of Oregon and the western border of Idaho. It has 652,488 acres and the canyon is 10 miles wide and the deepest gorge in North America. We took a day trip from Boise, up Highway 84 to Hunnington, Oregon, then cut off to Richland Oregon, crossed back over into Idaho and took the road past Seven Devils Scenic area, all the way to the end. The road is sometimes blacktop, but mostly gravel. On the way back we cut over onto Highway 71, back to 95. That route took us along the bottom of the canyon as we couldn't get on top because of forest fires on the Oregon side. It was a worthwhile trip, the scenery was great, but it was a very long day.

Boise: We decided to take a side trip from Idaho and attend the FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) Rally in Oregon. Oregon was Dean's 50th state, so he was anxious to go to Oregon. We stopped in Boise on the way, because we try to visit all the state capitols if possible. The Capitol was being renovated so we couldn't see the inside.

Ketchum: It was a quiet cow town until the Sun Valley Ski Resort was started. It now reminds me of Vail, Co. The area has many hiking/biking trails and lots of shopping. We arrived there the day the Castle Rock Fire started, and before it was over a month later, it burned thousands of acres, but thankfully no structures. At one time they turned on the snow making machines to protect Mt. Baldy. Three days after we left they evacuated the town. It was awe inspiring to watch the fire crews, there were over 1.000 fireman in town, from all over the country. As they drove down the street people waived and thanked them. Many businesses had signs thanking them. Earnest Hemingway lived there during the last years of his life and is buried there. There are many rich folks that have homes there, and the small airport had over 20 private jets parked there one day. Photos Below: Forest Fire, Mt Baldy, fires fire camp, and Hemingway grave. The area is fun to see once, the scenery was beautiful, but we probably won't go back, it's to commercial.
